Pressure Ulcers

AGA, can work with you to assess and prevent pressure ulcers (bed sores) for those with a disability, limited movement or with age concerns.

Pressure ulcers are caused when an area of skin and/or the tissues below are damaged as a result of being placed under sufficient pressure or distortion to impair its blood supply. Typically they occur in a person confined to a bed or a chair most of the time by an illness; as a result they are sometimes referred to as ‘bedsores’, or ‘pressure sores’.

The use of equipment such as seating or beds that are not specifically designed to provide pressure relief can also contribute to the development of pressure ulcers.

Healthcare professionals can identify people who are at risk of developing pressure ulcers by carrying out a pressure ulcer risk assessment.

The Solution

Many of the products within our range incorporate fluid filled, vapour-permeable, multi-stretch sacs that are encased within a supportive, heavy-duty foam surround. The fluid is able to move between the two compartments as the cushion contours to the body’s shape and position redistributing pressure over the widest surface area possible. The gel cushion’s design encourages the user to sit in a neutral pelvic tilt with the majority of the weight being taken by the buttocks and thighs. When the largest area of the user is in contact with the support surface the risk of developing high pressures which could lead to pressure damage is reduced. Other products use a soft elastomer, honeycomb structure that contours gently to large surface areas distributing weight evenly. Either choice will contribute to a more comfortable environment for the patient.

The new techniques in designing safe and life enhancing products means that they are an option for those users at high to very high risk of pressure related problems. Under testing, the newly designed seating enabled the patients to sit more comfortably, with an upright and symmetrical posture, for longer.

For those individuals seated for long periods and unable to adjust their position to relieve pressure, the risk of pressure-related problems increases. Therefore the importance of choosing the most appropriate seating system to ensure correct postural support and pressure care is vital.
